One thing that every reputable SEO agency consultant and freelancer will agree with is that search engine optimization is a marathon.

NOT a sprint.

What that means is that SEO ROI cannot be accurately calculated within a short interval of weeks or even months.

SEO is a long-term investment that can take years to pay off.

I apply the following formula to calculate the ROI derived from the SEO activities I perform on your website.

The following information is used to calculate the ROI against the SEO initiatives performed over your site:

  • Post-SEO campaign services – average monthly organic users  (Post – AMOU)
  • Post-SEO campaign services – average monthly conversion rate (Post – AMCR)
  • Pre-SEO campaign services –  average monthly organic users  (Pre – AMOU)
  • Pre-SEO campaign services – average monthly conversion rate (Pre – AMCR)
  • Average goal value (AVG)
  • ROI time period
  • SEO campaign services cost (CSC)
  • SEO ongoing maintenance services cost (MSC)

Examples of SEO ROI calculations:

  • Pre-SEO campaign services –  average monthly organic users  (Pre – AMOU) : 2,000
  • Post-SEO campaign services – average monthly organic users  (Post – AMOU) : 3,000
  • Pre-SEO campaign services – average monthly conversion rate (Pre – AMCR) : 0.5%
  • Post-SEO campaign services – average monthly conversion rate (Post – AMCR) : 0.75%
  • Average goal value: (AGV): $100
  • SEO campaign services cost (CSC): $1,000
  • SEO ongoing maintenance services cost (MSC): $500

Calculating the monthly Pre-SEO campaign services value:

  • = (Pre – AMOU) x (Pre – AMCR) x (AGV)
  • = (2,000) x (0.50%) x ($100)
  • =  $1000

Calculating the monthly Post-SEO campaign services value:

  • = (Post – AMOU) x (Post – AMCR) x (AGV)
  • = (3,000) x (0.75%) x ($100)
  • = $2,250

Calculating the value of the SEO campaign:

  • = $2,250 – $1,000
  • = $1,250

ROI over 1 month

  • SEO Revenue: $1,250
  • SEO Costs: $1,000 + ($500 my 1 month retainer)
  • SEO ROI:  $1,250  – $1,500 / $1,500
  • If you were to measure the return on investment with a time period of one month, this campaign would have a negative ROI.

ROI over 6 months

  • SEO Revenue: $1,250 x 6 = $7,500
  • SEO Costs: $1,000 + ($2,500 (my 6 month retainer) = $3,500
  • SEO ROI: $7,500 – $3,500 / $3,500
  • SEO ROI = 114%

ROI over 12 months

  • SEO Revenue: $1,250 x 12 = $15,000
  • SEO Costs: $1,000 + ($5000 (my 12 month retainer) = $6,000
  • SEO ROI: $15,000 – $6,000 / $6,000
  • SEO ROI = 183%

ROI over 24 months

  • SEO Revenue: $1,250 x 24 = $30,000
  • SEO Costs: $1,000 + ($10,000 (my 24 month retainer) = $12,000
  • SEO ROI: $30,000 – $12,000 / $12,000
  • SEO ROI = 233%

These SEO ROI examples do not take into the consideration the gains and value from assisted conversions with paid, referral and direct traffic as well as overall branding.
